Join Clean Air Task Force (CATF) to learn more about next-generation geothermal: what it is, the critical role it can play in state clean energy goals, and how policymakers can unlock its deployment. This is the fourth event in CATF’s 2026 State Policy Webinar Series.
The U.S. West has enormous geothermal potential, especially for next-generation technologies that can access heat miles below the earth’s surface. Geothermal energy can deliver clean, reliable electricity around the clock, helping meet long-term energy needs and strengthen grid resilience.
Developing geothermal projects involves navigating a complex and often lengthy process, with uncertainty at various stages – including transmission access, financing, and permitting. Many states have taken meaningful policy steps to support geothermal development, but realizing the full potential of this resource will require continued efforts. With growing demand for clean firm power and increasing momentum behind next-generation geothermal technologies, the U.S. is well-positioned to lead – if remaining barriers to development can be addressed.
This webinar will lay out a pathway for states to deploy their geothermal resources to advance community benefits and clean energy goals, based on research from CATF’s new report, Next-Generation Geothermal at Scale: A State Action Framework. And Puck Stair, from New Mexico’s Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department, will share the latest on next-generation geothermal developments in the state.
