About the event

Advances in satellite technology are transforming how methane emissions from landfills and waste facilities are detected, measured, and addressed. Increasingly accessible satellite observations are creating new opportunities for governments, waste operators, and other stakeholders to identify major emission sources, prioritize mitigation efforts, strengthen policies, and track progress toward climate goals.

Organized by Clean Air Task Force, with Carbon Mapper identified as a proposed co-host, this panel will explore how satellite methane data can be translated into practical action across Latin America’s waste sector. Drawing on emerging experiences from Brazil and the broader region, the discussion will examine how remote sensing technologies can support operational improvements, strengthen regulatory oversight, inform investment decisions, and improve accountability for emissions reductions.

The proposed discussion will feature Kait Siegel, Director of Waste Methane at Clean Air Task Force; Dan Cusworth, Vice President of Science at Carbon Mapper; and Adalberto Maluf, National Secretary of Urban Environment, Water Resources and Environmental Quality at Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Bringing together perspectives from government, technology providers, and climate policy organizations, the session will highlight opportunities to integrate satellite observations with ground-based measurements and operational data, build confidence in emissions information, and accelerate measurable methane reductions across the waste sector.
