Failure to adopt Net Zero Framework delays progress on global shipping decarbonization
Today, negotiations at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) failed to reach agreement on the Net-Zero Framework, a policy designed to align global shipping with climate goals and accelerate the transition to cleaner fuels. The outcome represents a setback for maritime decarbonization efforts and underscores the need for renewed commitment to establishing an effective, enforceable framework.
“The shipping industry needs clear direction on low-carbon fuel development, and the failure to adopt the Net-Zero Framework only deepens uncertainty for investors and slows innovation,” said Jonathan Lewis, Director of Transportation Decarbonization at CATF. “It’s vital that these talks move forward toward an effective agreement, one that safeguards food and feedstock resources and leads to verifiable emissions reductions. Rather than undermining that effort, the White House should recognize the clear advantage the U.S. has as a potential supplier of low-carbon fuels and engage constructively in setting standards for a cleaner, more competitive shipping industry.”
