EU-UK ‘reset’ opens door for new climate and energy partnership – CATF report
Brussels – Ahead of a key meeting between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, Clean Air Task Force (CATF) published a new report, Relationship Reset: EU-UK Collaboration on Climate and Energy, which outlines how both parties can leverage shared goals to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to a net-zero emissions economy.
The report highlights key areas for cooperation, including opportunities for joint efforts on industrial decarbonisation, clean hydrogen standards, methane mitigation, carbon capture and storage (CCS), nuclear energy, and fusion energy.
Alessia Virone, Europe Governments Affairs Director at CATF, noted the need for a new framework: “The geopolitical challenges and energy crisis have made clear the need for deeper collaboration between the UK and EU. Both are working towards climate neutrality and will need to deploy similar technologies to decarbonise. What we need to see is an ambitious framework for future EU-UK energy and climate collaboration, focused on expanding the set of climate solutions in the toolbox. However, this potential cooperation will depend on political will from both parties and will require strong political commitment.”
Rebecca Tremain, Director of UK Policy at CATF, emphasised the growing opportunity for the UK to re-establish its leadership role: “A new UK Government that is more open to collaboration provides an opportunity to re-energise the EU-UK relationship on climate and energy. Working together on key initiatives like carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, methane mitigation, and nuclear energy will be crucial to meet ambitious climate targets and deliver an energy secure future for both parties.”
CATF has previously published several resources offering strategic recommendations for the EU and UK’s path to a net-zero emissions economy. These include A Vision for the EU’s Net Zero Transition, which provides a realistic, technology-driven approach for the EU, A Solutions-Based Approach to the UK’s Net Zero Transition, and carbon dioxide without borders, discussing cross-border CO2 storage.
