Led Efforts to Cut Methane Around the World Through the EU Methane Regulation

CATF and our partners’ three-year effort to secure EU methane regulations secured major wins as the EU adopted an ambitious Methane Regulation in 2023. Our cutting-edge research on the scale of the problem and its effects on the EU, as well as our thought leadership and analysis outlining the design, popularity, and potential impact of an EU methane import standard, helped educate policymakers on the problem and provided a roadmap toward fixing it.  

These efforts were part of a longer-term strategy that included public campaigning, targeted scientific research, and direct advocacy in Brussels and beyond. The impact? The new European regulation we helped secure in 2023 is set to reduce global emissions of methane from oil and gas by a third and improve the health of almost 10 million people living near gas flares in EU oil and gas supplying countries – while providing an example for governments around the world.
