Led Campaign to Increase Carbon Effectiveness of Large Energy Buyers’ Purchasing Strategy

Corporate America has helped grow wind and solar energy by committing to purchase large amounts of these renewable energy sources directly. But wind and solar vary greatly by season, and when they aren’t available, the fossil fuel grid actually provides the power. CATF worked with companies such as Google to advance higher impact purchasing strategies that would provide round-the-clock carbon-free energy using always available zero-carbon sources, stimulating market for advanced “dispatchable” carbon-free technologies. In early 2021, responding to comments from CATF and more than a dozen NGOs and companies, the Biden Administration pledged to orient its electricity buying strategies around just such a high-impact strategy.
