Brazilian Waste Sector Methane Analysis

November 14, 2025 Category: Policy Work Area: Methane

This report provides a comprehensive analysis of methane emissions from Brazil’s waste sector, based on the current waste management system implemented in Brazil. It also highlights the policies already in place and includes regulations governing improvements in waste management and dumpsite closure. This report also considers instruments focusing on the development of the nascent biomethane market and the goal to incentivize recycling and diversion of organic waste to more productive use (Zero Methane Program and Fuel of the Future Law).

Ultimately, the path to successful waste methane management lies with the ability of Brazil’s municipalities to convert policy into action to increase its current low rate of separate waste collection access of 36% and become a Global South leader on solid waste management.
