BiCRS Protocol Scoring Tool
The BiCRS Benchmark
A tool for evaluating and strengthening biomass carbon removal protocols
Biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) can play an important role in carbon dioxide removal, but strong protocols are essential to ensuring that projects deliver durable, measurable climate benefits.
As interest in biomass carbon removal grows, the quality and consistency of protocols will be increasingly important to the integrity of carbon markets. The BiCRS Benchmark is an interactive tool from Clean Air Task Force that enables users to evaluate BiCRS protocols against 18 critical features that underpin high-quality carbon dioxide removal.

How it works
1. Evaluate
Assess a BiCRS protocol against 18 critical features using CATF’s science-based assessment framework.
2. Identify gaps
See where a protocol demonstrates strength and where additional rigor or information may be needed.
3. Benchmark
Compare results against CATF’s assessment of highest scoring approaches in evaluated BiCRS protocols.
4. Strengthen
Use the results to inform protocol development, revisions, and ongoing improvements.
How it helps
The BiCRS Benchmark is based on the current and rapidly evolving landscape of BiCRS protocol carbon accounting rules. It is designed for anyone working to develop, evaluate, or strengthen biomass carbon removal protocols, including:
- Protocol and project developers: Identify opportunities to strengthen methodologies and project approaches.
- Registries and methodology developers: Evaluate protocols using a consistent framework and identify areas where additional rigor may be warranted.
- Carbon removal buyers and market participants: Better understand protocol quality and the factors that affect confidence in carbon removal outcomes.
- Researchers and policymakers: Use a transparent framework to examine protocol design and support greater consistency across the BiCRS market.
A practical framework for stronger BiCRS protocols
The BiCRS Benchmark is based on the rubric CATF developed through its assessment of 25 publicly available BiCRS protocols. That assessment brought together an expert panel of scientists, engineers, and economists to evaluate protocol approaches across four core components of BiCRS systems:
- Biomass production and transportation
- Pre-processing and bioconversion
- Long-term carbon storage
- Overall system accounting
The BiCRS Benchmark translates this framework into a practical, self-scoring resource that allows users to assess protocol quality, identify gaps, and compare results with evaluated highest scoring approaches.
Help us Improve
The BiCRS Benchmark is designed to support continuous improvement across the biomass carbon removal ecosystem. We welcome feedback from protocol developers, registries, buyers, researchers, and other stakeholders using this resource.
