About the event

Join Clean Air Task Force for a webinar to learn more about next-generation geothermal: its potential in California, how geothermal deployment can benefit ratepayers, and the targeted investment in subsurface mapping that can help the state’s geothermal industry scale. This session will feature the results of new modeling illustrating the cost savings that could come from deploying geothermal across California, based on research from CATF’s report “Build Here: How Targeted State Investment in Geothermal Can Fill California’s Clean Firm Gap.”

California has ambitious climate goals, and meeting those goals will require clean firm power: energy sources that can generate low- or zero-carbon power on demand, for as long as needed, regardless of the weather. Geothermal is a clean firm energy source that is poised for significant expansion in California.

CATF’s new modeling indicates that commercial-scale deployment of clean firm technologies like geothermal could reduce California’s annual electricity supply costs in 2045 by $10-44 billion. But geothermal deployment has been slowed by barriers such as a lack of subsurface knowledge. Better mapping is needed to derisk development and help crowd in private investment. A targeted effort into subsurface mapping is a key piece of the puzzle to help California deploy geothermal at its full potential – delivering clean, reliable electricity around the clock, helping the state meet its long-term energy needs while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
