About the event

As a signatory to the Global Methane Pledge, Brazil, alongside 159 other countries, has committed to reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030. Currently, the solid waste sector is the second-largest source of methane emissions in the country (16%), with the landfilling of organic waste as the main driver — placing waste management at the heart of Brazil’s climate strategy. Building on this commitment, at COP29, countries responsible for 50% of global methane emissions signed the Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration, setting sectoral targets to reduce methane emissions from organic waste in future NDCs and to advance concrete actions under this agenda.

This event aims to advance concrete actions based on Brazilian and international experiences, leveraging them under the umbrella of the LOW-Methane Initiative. LOW-Methane, hosted by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), is a coalition of organizations collaborating on data, policy, technical assistance, and financial solutions for subnational governments and their national counterparts. Its goal is to accelerate the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge and the Paris Agreement by reducing 1 million tons of annual methane emissions from the solid waste sector well before 2030, unlocking up to USD 10 billion in public and private investments across up to 40 jurisdictions.
