Decarbonization opportunities for U.S. pulp and paper

This interactive mapping tool explores where carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon removal opportunities could be pursued the most effectively in the pulp and paper sector in the United States.

The map on the left displays the total CO2 emissions from every pulp and paper facility in the U.S., and breaks out the percentage of those emissions that come from biogenic sources.

The map on the right scores the same facilities along 5 criteria: (1) cost of capture (2) capture potential/ volume (3) storage cost (4) clustered infrastructure and (5) environmental and social co-benefits (see methodology for further information on data sources and how the facilities were scored). The lowest possible score across the facilities is 2, and the highest possible score is 15. The higher the score, the greater the opportunity is for CCS and/or carbon removals.

To navigate the tool, utilize the legend icons and the “information” icons on the top right of each map. To filter, use the state and company selection features at the uppermost right of the tool.
