CATF welcomes release of the Global Methane Status Report co-authored by CATF’s Jonathan Banks

November 18, 2025 Work Area: Methane

The Global Methane Status Report, released this week at COP30 in Belém, provides the clearest assessment yet of global efforts to cut methane. Produced by the UN Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the report shows that while policies and market shifts are beginning to slow projected emissions growth, only full deployment of proven and available mitigation measures will close the gap to targets set by the Global Methane Pledge.

Jonathan Banks, CATF’s Global Director for Methane Pollution Prevention, served as a coordinating lead author for the energy sector chapter and represented the report’s authors at the launch press conference, which can be viewed here

“The Global Methane Status Report shows we have made real progress, but not nearly enough,” said Banks. “The energy sector alone could deliver up to an 86 percent reduction in methane emissions by 2030, cutting about 94 million tonnes a year with solutions that cost only a small share of the sector’s income. We are seeing stronger oil and gas regulations take hold, but persistent gaps in enforcement, monitoring, and finance still slow progress. What we need now is urgent and coordinated action to capture this enormous potential to bend the curve on climate change in our lifetimes.”

Methane is one of the most potent climate pollutants and is responsible for roughly half a degree Celsius of the warming we are experiencing today. Cutting methane is also one of the fastest ways to slow warming. CATF has been deeply engaged since the launch of Global Methane Pledge to help countries develop practical strategies to meet their commitments.
