The Trump administration highlighted energy innovation on Earth Day, here’s what it will take

May 20, 2025

WASHINGTON – Following President Trump’s Earth Day statement indicating a focus on advancing carbon capture and storage, nuclear energy, and next-generation geothermal, Clean Air Task Force (CATF) released a policy roadmap that explores the federal policies and actions needed to deploy all three technologies at commercial scale.

“Federal investment in innovative energy technologies like nuclear, carbon capture and storage, and next-generation geothermal are critical for American leadership and global competitiveness,” said Holly Reuter, Climate and Clean Energy Implementation Director at CATF. “And while the Trump administration has signaled its support for commercializing these technologies, it will take federal leadership across the whole value chain from research to deployment to achieve full scale commercialization.

“By providing federal support through tax incentives, demonstration program funding, sufficient staffing, and more, the U.S. can lead in energy innovation while driving economic development, bolstering domestic security, creating jobs, and improving public health” Reece Rushing, U.S. Federal Policy Director. “CATF’s new policy brief shows what it will take to get us there.”

Read more in CATF’s policy brief, “Opportunities for Federal Leadership: Energy Innovation, Commercialization, and Deployment.” Forthcoming briefs will highlight federal policies and actions to commercialize nuclear, carbon capture and storage, and next-generation geothermal.
