California passes carbon capture and storage legislation, marking a pivotal move toward achieving its ambitious climate goals

September 1, 2022 Work Area: Carbon Capture

SACRAMENTO – The California State Legislature voted to pass SB 905, critical carbon capture legislation that helps expand the number of clean energy solutions the state will be able to use to achieve its climate goals. SB 905 directs the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to create a carbon capture and storage program in the state aimed at accelerating the deployment of carbon management technologies and ensuring they are deployed in a safe and equitable way. The bill heads to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed into law.

“California has once again proven its leadership in climate action and technological innovation with the passage of SB 905,” said Ben Grove, Carbon Storage Manager at Clean Air Task Force. “Carbon capture and storage is an essential part of the climate solution, and the passage of this legislation underpins the need for an expanded suite of decarbonization solutions to reduce emissions and achieve California’s climate goals. SB 905 will support the state’s ambitious climate policy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions state-wide by 2045, and complements CARB’s draft 2022 Scoping Plan that calls for significant deployment of carbon capture and removal to meet this policy.”

“This carefully crafted bill addresses key barriers to the deployment of carbon capture, removal, and storage technologies and will accelerate deployment of these important technologies while ensuring they are environmentally sound. We applaud lawmakers for their commitment to climate action by passing SB 905 and look forward to continuing to support the implementation of equitable carbon capture and storage in California and beyond.”
