U.S. aims to tackle transportation emissions through launch of holistic strategy to decarbonize freight networks by 2040
WASHINGTON – Today, the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation announced a new national strategy to achieve zero-emission freight networks by 2040 in an interagency effort to take a whole-of-government approach to decarbonization. The effort is in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
“We applaud the Joint Office for its commitment to decarbonize freight networks, which play an important role in the transportation sector,” says Jonathan Lewis, Director of Transportation Decarbonization at Clean Air Task Force. “This is a critical time to invest in transportation decarbonization, and it must be done in a holistic and highly coordinated way that addresses emissions from the entire system. Federal leadership is essential to ensure that investments are made strategically across the U.S. to build and connect the necessary charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure needed by 2040 to maximize emissions reductions. This whole-of-government approach is a welcome effort from the administration. CATF looks forward to engaging to ensure it advances significant emissions reductions needed in the highest-emitting sector in the U.S.”
The strategy announced today lays out a four-stage process for establishing zero-emission freight hubs and building corridors to connect them over the next 15 years, beginning with markets that are currently furthest along and eventually extending to cover the entire interstate highway network. Charging and hydrogen fueling stations will be developed to support deep decarbonization of a wide range of medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
